The trilogy "OST" by Ulas Samchuk (1905-1987) is the novels "Moroz's small village", "Darkness", "Escape from Self". The "Escape from Self" is the last novel of the "OST" trilogy. The events of the novel begin in 1945 on the territory of Germany. The main characters - Ivan Moroz and his daughter Vira - must make a difficult choice: go to the West or return to Soviet Ukraine. Ulas Samchuk does not define the exit of a Ukrainian man outside the national space as "escape from himself", but as a historical necessity of self-preservation of the individual in order to return and fulfill one's national mission.
The life of Ukrainian emigrants in Canada is the subject of the novel "On Solid Ground" (1967). The hero of the novel, Pavlo Danyliv, is a strong type of Ukrainian man who is devoid of inferiority complexes, a pronounced individualist who wants to live, not exist. Pavlo builds a new life in Canada, where he arrives after the end of the Second World War.
