This publication features correspondence from the time of his service in the Soviet army, when he, a 24-year-old young writer well-known in Ukraine, was taken into the army and sent to the Arctic "for re-education". Most of the letters are to his young wife - Neonila Bilichenko and her answers. A kind of epistolary diary, because messages were written almost every day. From the epistles, pictures of everyday life in the army, the exhausting experience of separation from the beloved, the sharpened worldview of a young soldier, for whom "foreign faces, foreign language, foreign world" are incomprehensible; at the same time, we have the opportunity to learn the secrets of the creative laboratory, when the author of future literary masterpieces was formed. The letters of the 20-year-old wife contain not only her own emotional history of her relationship with her lover, but also provide interesting information about the artistic and literary Kyiv of the first half of the 1960s.
Each letter is accompanied by a lengthy commentary written by the author already in our days.
