OLD KHATA BOOK is a photo book about houses and people. Photographer Anna Ilchenko and journalist Svitlana Oslavska visited almost 100 villages in Ukraine in 2020–2023: from Transcarpathia to Luhansk Region and from Chernihiv Region to Kherson Region (some of them are now occupied). In photographs and recorded conversations they sought to record village houses in the current moment of history, because this layer of the Ukrainian culture is changing over time and destroyed by war. The book includes selected photos and fragments of interviews.
Old Khata Book is not an encyclopedia of regional construction styles, although readers will find various traditions of house construction here. This is a documentary essay at the intersection of photography and literature, reportage and visual history. When talking to house owners, the authors started with questions about housing, but often everything ended with people's monologues about life.
Therefore, this book goes beyond architecture and ethnography to a broader topic: what Ukrainians are like, how they understand home, beauty, life and death. It does not exhaust this topic, but invites further research into it.
English translations of all texts are provided at the end of the book.
