In the city of Hakodate on Hokkaido island is a monument to the first Russian consul in Japan - Joseph Antonovich Gashkevich (1815-1875). Son of the Belarusian people, he was the first Russian scientists visited in South Africa, studied the flora and fauna of China, the Philippines, Korea, and Japan. I. Gashkevich mastered many foreign languages and was even Japanese-Russian dictionary. He made a circumnavigation of the famous fregatse "Pallada".
