In the city of Hakodate on Hokkaido island is a monument to the first Russian consul in Japan - Joseph Antonovich Gashkevich (1815-1875). Son of the Belarusian people, he was the first Russian scientists visited in South Africa, studied the flora and fauna of China, the Philippines, Korea, and Japan. I. Gashkevich mastered many foreign languages and was even Japanese-Russian dictionary. He made a circumnavigation of the famous fregatse "Pallada". On the vicissitudes of his life, and this book tells, the material for which the writer V. Guzanav collected not only in Russia and Belarus, but also in Japan, where it is still living memory of our countryman.
