The memoirs of the mortar man Pavel Zotov present a threatening and true book about war. It is free from the stereotyped stories about heroism of patriotic propaganda. The author has passed three battlefronts as a battery commander, head of the battle reconnaissance, and head of the topographic service. He took part in the battles on the Neva patch, winter attack near Leningrad in 1944, fight against Finns on the Karelian Isthmus, participated in liberation of Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Austria.
