Poland in the 1980s is usually associated with greyness, shortages and crisis. It was a time of growing influence of the Catholic Church and weakening power of communist ideology. In such a painted landscape, everyday life of the last decade of the Polish People's Republic appears as a constant struggle with the economy of shortages and the apparatus of the totalitarian state, easily fitting into the martyrological legend of the hardships of life in communist Poland. The history of sexuality of this period is told in a similar way - as a daily battle with prudish morality, lack of knowledge about sex and lack of access to commercial erotica. The history of Polish naturism presented in this book is a counterbalance to this story. Instead of greyness, we will see the blue of a holiday sky and rays of the July sun. Instead of queues in front of shops, crowds of cheerful people on the beach in Chalupy. In place of restrained Catholic sexual ethics, a free attitude to nudity and fun with only slightly concealed erotic subtext. All these phenomena lead us to ask about an alternative history of Poland – one in which nudity and corporeality are not taboo subjects, and the joy of life and sex replaces national martyrdom.
