What was it like to live in a small town where Czech, German and Jewish destinies intertwined for centuries, and where wartime events and ideologies managed to upset this delicate balance within a few years?
Neighbours at War provides a deep insight into the coexistence in Trest during the dramatic years 1938-1946. It shows how small-town neighbourly relations were transformed under the pressure of the Nazi occupation, how the displacement and liquidation of the Jewish community, collaboration with the occupying power and domestic resistance took place. It culminates in the bloody May 1945, when the town became the scene of a massacre of civilians and subsequent retaliation against the German population.
Based on previously unknown archival documents and personal testimonies, the author reconstructs everyday life in an atmosphere of growing tension, fear and violence. But the book does not limit itself to historical reconstruction - it also asks the fundamental questions: how did people make decisions in liminal situations? Who was victim, perpetrator, observer - and where did the line between these roles lead?
Neighbors at War provides a new perspective on wartime violence and coming to terms with the past, showing that history is not just the story of great events, but above all the story of the specific people who lived through them.
