The monograph investigates formation of the idea of the nation's creation on the basis of the Tatar ethnos (Tatarism) and on the basis of the Turkic superethnos (Turkism) in the Tatar society. Antagonism between these two tendencies is explored in different spheres of spiritual life, politics, culture, and the Press in the context of great social shifts in Russia. The second part of the research covers transformation of the national idea in conditions of the totalitarian Bolshevist regime, reveals the role of the national factor during revolutionary breaking of the society, and shows anti-colonial direction of this factor.
