Many years ago, a man who left his wife and children to go to a foreign land, in order to return home, transfers his soul into the body of a dog and runs away. When he returns home, his wife dies and his son is taken away by robbers. He takes his wife's soul, who has taken refuge at home, to a hermit monk, and transfers it into the body of a crow. The story continues with the dog and the crow traveling to a faraway land in search of their son.
