Baron Sigismund von Herberstein (1486 - 1566) was an outstanding diplomat on the Habsburgs’ service. Carrying out the orders, given by his crown – bearing masters, he travelled through the whole Europe and met famous and important people. Emperor Karl V and the master of the orthodox people sultan Suleiman the Magnificent were among his interlocutors. Herberstein twice visited the Moscow State, where he carried on negotiations with Grand Duke Vasily III. His interesting book “Moscovia” for the first time provided the Europeans with a detailed description of a far and mysterious country, its people and their morals and manners.
