The book is the result of many years of work by the author in the central and regional archives of the FSB of the Russian Federation, as well as the Russian State Military Historical Archive. A lot of unique information was gleaned from personal conversations between Valery Nadtachaev and veterans of special departments of the KGB of the USSR and Smersh. Reflecting the formation and development of military counterintelligence in the context of general history, the author avoided subjective approaches and assessments, while at the same time not avoiding sensitive topics. The events collected in the book once again convince us: history cannot be reshaped at your own discretion. It only leaves us the right to decide what to take with us on the road: ashes or fire.
