The proceedings are the output of a scientific colloquium organised in November 2021 by the Institute of World Literature of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava and the Department of Slovak Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Nitra. The publication reflects the intensely felt need in Slovak scientific circles for a new interpretation of the research legacy of Mikulas Bakos (1914-1972), literary scholar, university lecturer, founder and first director of the Institute of World Literature and Languages of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Studies I. Pospisil, J. Gbur, S. Pastekova, O. Sladek, M. Navratil and D. Teplan prove that Bakos's scientific work still has a significant potential for a broader exploration of methodological and socio-historical issues of literary science in Slovakia and beyond its borders and has contributed in a fundamental way to the new quality of Slovak literary science thinking and the reception of world literatures in Slovakia.
