From the beginning of the 19th century, the Russian Empire gradually conquered Georgia, which had been divided into kingdoms and principalities, and tried to forcibly take over its administrative rule and integrate it into the Russian imperial system. The approach changed in 1845, after Mikhail Vorontsov was sent as regent to the Caucasus.
The book deals with this turning point in Georgian history, as well as the study of the institution of the regent and the process of establishing Russian imperial rule according to the theories of institutionalism.
