The book is an attempt of the Latvian professor of French literature Karlis Racevskis to cover the basic points of his work, the central figure of which is Michel Foucault, a French philosopher whose ideas influenced Western philosophy greatly. The philosopher attempted to show that basic ideas, normally taken to be permanent truths about human nature and society, change in the course of history; he offered new concepts about prisons, the police, insurance, mental illness, gay rights, and welfare. Foucault also studied how everyday practices enable people to define their identities and systematize knowledge.
