The book was written after an archeological study of the ancient Thracian beehive tombs at Mezek and Vulche Pole in southern Bulgaria, carried out between 1931 and 1933. The author Bogdan Filov (1883-1945) was an archeologist, historian and politician who served as prime minister of Bulgaria. In the book, Filov analyzes in great detail all rooms of the tomb at Mezek and the objects discovered there, including gold and bronze artifacts. He also describes the nearby tomb at Vulche Pole (under Mount Sheinovets) and other sites in the Mezek area which had been explored, and draws comparisons with other ancient tombs. The book includes 110 photos and drawings.
