The introduction briefly tells about the Meryan history. The explanatory dictionary contains presumably Meryan vocabulary extracted from the onomasticon and toponymicon of the Upper Volga region and the Volga-Oka interfluve, as well as Meryan words of Russian dialects and argot languages, which were used by residents of the Kostroma, Yaroslavl, Ivanovo and Vladimir regions. As stated in the preface, the book is "a complete list of the currently known Meryan words and linguistic reconstructions based on Morris Swadesh's List of Finno-Ugric Languages." An outline of Meryan grammar is supplemented by a Russian-Meryan phrasebook. In addition, the publication includes a commented list of personal Meryan names, a list of modern post-Meryan surnames. The book ends with the publication of an essay by O.B. Tkachenko "The Meryan language and the ethnic history of the Great Russian people."
