The description of the socio-economic situation in the European North of Russia in the mid-19th century is presented through the prism of the broad and diverse activities of the merchants of the Vologda province. The main source is the materials of the weekly regional publication "Vologda Provincial Gazette" for 1838-1860. Based on private advertisements in the newspaper, the characteristics of the merchants' activities in the sphere of trade and entrepreneurship are given. The main areas of the merchants' charitable activities are analyzed: the special contribution of merchants to the development of the system of female education in the province is noted, as well as the trusteeship activity of representatives of the merchant class during the Crimean War. For the first time, the charitable activities of merchants in the sphere of urban prison economy are presented in a complex. A description of the everyday life and social life of the provincial merchants is given.
