The book tells the story of the major architectural landmarks along one of the city's central streets—recognized cultural heritage sites—as well as more modest merchant tenement houses with equally fascinating pasts. It highlights the city’s oldest public garden (now Gorky Park), historical monuments and significant examples of urban sculpture, and postwar Soviet neoclassical buildings erected in place of those destroyed during the Second World War.
