Sergey Korolyov was the head Soviet rocket engineer and designer during the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s. He is considered to be the father of practical astronautics. Yury Gagarin was a Soviet cosmonaut. On April 12, 1961 he became the first human in outer space and the first to orbit the Earth. He received medals from around the world for his pioneering tour in space.
