The literature of the ancient world is included in the first volume. It all starts with the Epic of Gilgamesh. In the form of this epic we have before us the oldest literary monument in the world. This epic was lost and was discovered in the nineteenth century as a result of excavations. Until then, it was believed that the first great texts in the form of the Iliad and Odyssey were left to us by Homer.
