In the book offered to the reader, in a comparative historical aspect, the phenomenon of a Russian estate and a Western European castle is presented as real artifacts of everyday life and culture, which gave rise to a special type of literature, which in the Russian tradition is usually called a manor, and in the European - literary castles (châteaux littéraires). The chronological framework of the study is the end of the XIX - the first half of the XX century, which does not exclude individual excursions both in earlier and later times.
