The majority of the memoirs that form the book by the eminent publicist and prose writer A.A.Amfiteatrov, was extracted from emigrant periodicals and archival sources. The essays give an authentic view of the Russian life in the XIXth - XXth centuries. On the basis of personal experience, the author describes Moscow University, journalists' milieu, the world of opera, revolutionary Petrograd, the Ch.K. Prison, merchants and masons. The meetings with L.N.Tolstoy, A.P.Chekhov, A.S.Suvorin, N.S.Gumilev and other Russian outstanding figures compile a considerable part of the edition.
