Lermontov's life is a mosaic that researchers assemble from fragments found over the past century and a half in the archives and memoirs of contemporaries. Alas, fragmentary documentary information is not enough to restore the entire mosaic of the poet's authentic biography. Unfortunately, there are so few people willing to search for new materials about the poet and his entourage in the archives currently available to any user, and to carefully separate the wheat from the chaff, rhetorically speaking, that we can already talk about the decline of documentary Lermontov studies.
