The post-war borderland was a melting pot of enthusiasts and adventurers, but also of those who wanted to "clean up". In Liberec, along with the events of February 1948, it gave rise to a group that disagreed with the communist coup and decided to fight it with weapons in hand: to blow up the May Day tribune on which the city's leading politicians and officials were to stand. The head of the whole action was Josef Kryslicka, a gendarme and partisan with a dubious reputation. But the assassination did not take place, the bomb exploded earlier and killed some of the group. Their mistake, but also their mere acquaintance with them, was the cause of others: as part of an elaborate political trial, a number of people were sentenced to many years in prison. Among them was the official doctor Jan Šolc, whom most Liberians remember as a man who helped the unjustly imprisoned.
