The book has five sections: “Zhukovsky and his entourage”, “Complex ways of development of Russian “archaism””, “The formation of the Russian idea: attempts to create a national tragedy. Karamzinists as ideologists”, “Theater between literature and ideology”, “Pedagogy as ideology”. The book shows how, over the course of decades, the destinies of two Russian literary schools of the early 19th century, associated with the names of N.M. Karamzin and A.S. Shishkov. Their clash, as the author demonstrates, was not limited to a discussion on issues of language, but was a polemic on the problems of national cultural identity.
