The present publication is the graduation thesis on the education of Jews in the period of 1772-1859 defended by Abromas Girsovicius in 1938 at Vytautas Magnus University, the Department of Law. The work is based on various publications and monographs of historians. The most valuable feature of Girsovicius paper is the fact that primary education is presented as an inseparable part of the sociocultural life of the Jewish community. It also shows the reasons why the state Jewish school under the czarist government control did not become popular.
