Many years of research experience on the development and possibility of using biological methods for cleaning and restoring soils contaminated with oil and petroleum products in the Murmansk region are summarized. Biotechnology can become an alternative way to clean up contaminated areas in the extreme conditions of the Euro-Arctic region. The proposed bioremediation methods can be used both for post-cleaning of soil after cleanup of oil and petroleum product spills, and for eliminating old contamination as part of reducing the area of areas with accumulated environmental damage. Recommended biotechnologies make it possible to clean up contaminated areas and restore disturbed areas of the Arctic and Subarctic with minimal negative consequences and side effects. Natural mechanisms underlying the methods of biostimulation, bioaugmentation and sorption-biological purification contribute to the restoration of ecosystems and the maintenance of biodiversity.
