The book is dedicated to the paleographic study of watermarks in Russia in the first third of the XIXth century. The author reveals the historical conditions, requirements, and the first attempts to create watemark collection; introduces new names of Russian researchers of watermarks. The author explores activities of a Vologda merchant Ivan Laptev - well known collector of antiquities. The author analyzes Laptev's collections of watermarks and also his collection of antique manuscripts, books, and coins, depicting him as a practical paleographer.
