Migration processes lie in the heart of creation of a human civilization. The movement of nomads and traders, armies and slave convoys, missioners and scholars, administrative officials and hired laborers united the world bringing together its peoples. Many of these population movements are also found on a vast territory once known as the Russian Empire, later - the Soviet Union. The collapse of the USSR in 1991 and a subsequent transformation of all spheres of economic and social life gave rise to new mass migrations, mainly forced ones, and characterized by their ethnic overtones. This book analyzes post-Soviet migrations: their causes, consequences and influence on the fates of ordinary people. Contributors to the volume are well-known scholars from Russia, Kazakhstan, Germany and the United Kingdom.
