Ukrainian literature of the 19th century was much stranger and more diverse than one might think when looking at school and university programs. Mykhailo Nazarenko's anthology contains one and a half hundred texts - mostly little-known or completely unknown to the modern reader (some have not been reprinted for a century and a half!). Not necessarily the "most significant" or "most influential" works - but interesting today. From "Song of the Black Sea Army" by Anton Holovaty (because it is from her, not from the "Aeneid" begins printed literature "in the living Ukrainian language") to "It's not time Івана" by Ivan Franko: the path of our culture from "Little Russia" to "Ukraine". indirect, uncertain, unpredictable. And fifty essays about each of the authors: why did they write this and that? Why are some forgotten and others remembered for not the best works?
"Apart from Kobzar" is a real Ukrainian classical literature. Almost all - of course, except for "Kobzar".
