After the military coup in 1934 when censorship stopped the left oriented newspapers in Bulgaria where Iliia Beshkov (1901-1958) published his unsparing political caricatures, he became caught up with creative rabies to draw everything which humans do thinking they will never be caught. He looked into the home and the social baths, into the brothels, into the cabarets, into the bedrooms. This is a trip of the painter who can see the nature of the king and the political clique which were made from the friendly environment – the life of the urban human with all of the passions and vices which turns him/her into a loyal follower, forgiving the corruption of his/hers rulers. There is no such of analogy – neither in Bulgaria, nor outside its borders in the period of the two world wars – of such of painter’s behavior which rebukes the over-aroused men, the lustful widows, the hurrying to the bed husbands, the seducing ones, the making sex ones… It is understandable that the most innocent Beshkov’s paintings have been showed so far. During the decades, his aroused paintings await their publicity.
The present edition collects 180 paintings, most of them presented for the first time. They present him as an exceptional painter and a tireless seeker of the truth about the human. All the lust, the deformity, the beauty of his characters are his offspring which he loves without making them up, without ridiculing them, without hating them…
