In February 22, 1944, 650 people were sent to Auschwitz stacked on twelve freight trains. Only Primo Levy and two others survived, after a year, before their release from the Russian army in January 1945. In the camp, Levy observes everything, remembers everything, tells everything: the dumping in the dormitories the comrades who discovered in the morning dead from hunger and cold the humiliations and the daily work, under the blows of "Kapos" the periodic "choices" where they separated the sick from the healthy, to send them to death the hangings for example the trains full of Jews and gypsies, which were driven upon their arrival at the crematoria ...
And yet, this narrative is dominated by the most striking dignity: no manifestation of hatred, no exaggeration, no exploitation of personal suffering, but a moral reflection on pain, elevated by a vision of life. If This Is Man, written in 1947, is considered one of the masterpieces of world literature on concentration camps and one of the most shocking testimonies of our time. In Italy, it has been taught in schools since the 1960s.
