April 4, 1942. The ship carrying the first Poles reaches Pahlavi in Iran. They are greeted by a sandy beach - this is where a town will be built: hundreds of white tents, which will become home to tens of thousands of people for many weeks. Some, after disembarking, kiss the Persian soil. Those who survived the journey from Siberia believe in a chance for a normal life, hope to return to Poland and meet their loved ones again. They hope that their fate will change here. Inspired by the history of her own family, the author meticulously reconstructs the paths of Poles in Iran. She combs through archives and talks to those who, as children, made a dramatic journey to freedom. Houses on the Sand is both a story about lesser-known pages from the history of World War II and a moving image of the universal experience of refugees.
