The cult work of Mykola Arkas, which collects the history of the Ukrainian people until the beginning of the twentieth century. In the publication, the author presents the results of long research work, provides photographic documents, factual materials about the life and customs of Ukrainians. Mykola Arkas initially planned to simply write a popular essay for his grandson to study history, but later published a book for a wider audience. The first edition, published in 1908 in St. Petersburg with a circulation of 7,000 copies, was sold out in just one month. Mykola Arkas is a Ukrainian cultural and educational figure, writer, composer, historian, and philanthropist. One of the founders and the chairman of "Education" in Nikolaev and public school with the Ukrainian language of instruction. Author of the first Ukrainian lyrical folk opera "Katerina" based on a poem by Taras Shevchenko.
