The book covers one of the most controversial and complicated periods in the life of peasants from the Western region of Russia (contemporary Smolensk, Bryansk and Kaluga Regions) - from the revolution of 1917 till the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). The authors regard peculiarities of the agrarian revolution (1917-1918), social and economic development of the western village during the so called "military communism", changes in village culture and social psychology.
