By request of the Crown Prince Alexander Alexandrovich (future emperor Alexander III) the War Office was asked to assign an author for compiling a book about the Crimean War, and especially the heroic defense of Sevastopol. Colonel Dubrovin, already a renowned expert on this period and a former editor of “Sevastopol collection" was chosen to write the book. When the work was completed, it didn’t pass censoring. Despite the goodwill of the heir Dubrovin’s work was not published. It was decided to publish it after the termination of secrecy for some documents referred to in the book. So "History of the Crimean war” was published a quarter of a century later. Dubrovin did not edit the text and published the very same manuscript that he once presented to Alexander.
