This massive work traces the fate of the Bulgarians over the last 23 centuries. The author Dimitar H. Popov was born into a patriotic family with a military background. He was imprisoned by the communist authorities in the 1940s and 1950s for anti-government propaganda. Popov says that in his book he tried to lift the veil on unknown records relevant to Bulgarian history. He says: "Those who have pronounced themselves on Bulgarian antiquity and more recent history are mainly foreign historians from hostile countries which have been defeated by us or have conquered us. Some such authors have even invented history for us. They have looked at the Slavs or the Turks in search of our roots with the intention to degrade us..."
