Having drawn on the most recent archival and printed sources, the authors trace the history of Bashkortostan beginning from the Great Reforms of 1861 to the dethronement of the Romanov Dynasty in 1917. The first volume deals mainly with administrative reforms in the region, demographical processes, ethnic-class stratification of the population and land relations. Unique historical sources are published as a supplement.
