“Records of the Grand Historian” by Sima Qian (145-86 BC), an ancient Chinese historian, is an outstanding monument of the world’s historiography. It is an encyclopedia of the ideas and knowledge about China in III – II centuries BC. The first volume includes the most interesting chapters from the first four parts of “Shiji”: Benji ("Basic Annals"), Biao ("Chronologies"), Shu ("Essays") and Shijia ("Hereditary Houses). So, the readers have an opportunity to find out lots of interesting things from one volume. They will get acquainted not only with dramatic turning-points in political and social history of the great country, but with the achievements of the Chinese people in spiritual and material culture of high importance, too. Volume 2 includes chapters from the last part of the work, which is the largest one. It is Liezhuan ("Memoirs"). Through the complicated fortunes of the great political figures and commanders, famous philosophers, officials and well-known poets Sima Qian managed to show the multivariate history of China in VIIth – IId centuries BC and to interpret the dramatic struggle of ideas of the time, when he lived.
