In the book, I. S. Butov and M. B. Gershtein for the first time summarized information about “airplanes”, “airships” and other unidentified objects observed from the territory of the Russian Empire and perceived as “enemy” (with rare exceptions) from many different sources, in including a number of archival files that were not previously published or were published only fragmentarily and many publications in rare periodicals. The book examines both the actions of the authorities aimed at eliminating the threat that has arisen, and the reaction of the population to these objects. Several chapters in the format of journal publications were previously published on the site, but they were included in the book in a substantially revised and expanded form. On the pages of this unique publication, you can find excerpts from archival documents from 1914-1916, which dealt with various light phenomena in the sky and even pilots who came into contact with the local population. The authors specifically asked the artists to reconstruct some of the iconic observations of those years, and in the appendix you can find maps of the Russian Empire with points plotted on them, from where such reports came from. The color application consists of 39 illustrations. The bibliography includes 347 literary and 57 archival sources.
