The prototype of the book is Valentin Ivanovich Tsvetkov (August 27, 1948 - October 18, 2002) - Russian politician, governor of the Magadan region in 1996-2002. He became a victim of a contract killing.
On October 18, 2002, in Moscow on Novy Arbat, Tsvetkov was killed near the office of the regional representative office. The killer, who was waiting at the building, shot Tsvetkov in the head, causing him to die on the spot. The main version of the murder is related to the distribution of fishing quotas for marine bioresources and attempts by organized criminal groups (including ethnic ones) to weaken state control in the region's gold mining. The suspects in the murder were Russian citizens Alexander Zakharov and Martin Babakekhyan. They were arrested on July 7, 2006 in the Spanish resort of Marbella. On August 18, 2007, Spain extradited Alexander Zakharov to Russia. Martin Babakekhyan was extradited to Russia on January 19, 2008. In 2011, the jury considered that the guilt of Martin Babakekhyan, Artur Anisimov, Alexander Zakharov and Masis Akhunts in involvement in the murder was proven. The Moscow City Court sentenced them to imprisonment for a term of 13.5 to 19 years.
