The book is about Georgi Vulkov (1897-1942), a politician of the Kingdom of Bulgaria who was affiliated with the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union (BZNS). He founded the Pladne newspaper, around which one of the BZNS factions, BZNS Pladne, was formed. The authorities accused Vulkov of establishing contact with the U.S. intelligence station chief for the Middle East and the Balkans. The Americans allegedly appointed Vulkov as station chief for Bulgaria and entrusted him with spearheading the work of BZNS Pladne in favor of the West.
