The book is about Bulgaria's best expressionist poet Geo Milev (1895-1925). It was written by another talented poet, Ivan Granitski (born 1953), who, like Milev, is also a literary historian and a publisher. Milev's artificial glass eye is staring at us even today from the fearsome graves gaping open in the spiritual and physical body of Bulgaria. It tells us that the human spirit cannot be defeated by the atrocities of raw power. It brings to mind Ivan Vazov's famous words: "You can't extinguish what is meant to burn forever". It proclaims that poetry is invincible when it is a wail and a rapture, a storm and a nightingale's song all coming from the people's soul. Milev's scary eye is a symbol of the Bulgarians' tragic national fate and a window to the immortal Bulgarian poetic tradition.
