Gagauz: Orthodox Turks The Gagauz are a people of Turkic origin and Orthodox faith who historically lived on the territory of the Bujak region, which is currently divided between Moldova and Ukraine.
Pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Christian Vostok) is an important part of the Orthodox culture and traditional Gagauz worldview. It permeated all spheres of the nation's life and was one of the components of their religious identity. According to the traditional pilgrimage practice of the Gagauz, the holy places were divided into more and less significant ones. The Holy Land (Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee, Mount Tabor, etc.) was considered the most holy place on earth, where pilgrimages (hajilyk) were made to worship the Holy Sepulchre.
