Can you confidently say what was happening in the country at the beginning of January 2022: a peaceful march, an attempted coup, a terrorist attack, social disorder, a protest by those dissatisfied with the authorities, the beginning of a civil war? And maybe now, after a while, it only seems to you that you remember what happened then? Maybe your memories are mixed with what other people said and told in those days or say and tell today? The authors of this book are Almaty residents. Some people have lived in Almaty since birth, and for others this city became their home not so long ago, but we all sincerely love and value our city. Why did such dramatic events take place in Almaty? These are the reasons that prompted the Strategy Foundation to take up work on this book and make our city the object of description. We, sociological researchers, were aware of the need to record the events that took place in the city in those days. Who can tell about the events themselves, if not its participants and eyewitnesses? They are the carriers of the very first-hand information that we wanted to study. Our interlocutors in January-March 2022 were entrepreneurs, firefighters, employees of private companies, taxi drivers, military and police officers, both active and retired, unemployed, self-employed, journalists, political activists and social activists, representatives of associations, university teachers, cooks, representatives of government agencies, students, pensioners, foreign citizens. As a result, 60 interviews were conducted, which served as the basis for writing the book.
