The book offers a look at palaces from several perspectives. The first is the most obvious, historical: who lived here and what happened, what palace life looked like in different eras, where the owners got their ideas about what their estates should be like, and who embodied these ideas. The second is related to historical continuity and identity: how palaces influenced the areas where they were located, how (and why) they survived in Soviet times, what they can tell about our cultural heritage.
