The XVIIIth century is peculiar in the history of Russia. In 1703 St.Petersburg was founded. But the most distinguishing feature is that almost during the whole century women were governing Russia: Catherine I (1725-1727), Anna Ivanovna (1730-1740), Anna Leopoldovna (1740-1741), Elizabeth Petrovna (1741-1762), Catherine (II) the Great (1762-1796). Each of them contributed to the development of Petersburg culture.
