This book presents the history of the emergence and development of criminal and political exile in Russia. Using the example of Siberia and the Irkutsk province of the 17th-19th centuries, the author examines the features of the application of this type of punishment, the organization of supervision of criminals, determines their places of accommodation, living conditions and the “inner world” of exile colonies. Siberia was used by the state not only as a "prison without bars" to isolate criminal and political criminals. Salt and gold, coal and silver were mined with the labor of convicts, fortresses and roads were built, new lands were developed.
