Making use of the published and archival sources this work is concerned with ethnographic studies conducted in Eastern Galicia, Bukovyna and in the Transcarpathian Region in the 1850s - the early 1870s. Comparative development of the general ethnographic studies in Ukraine is also traced. The work discusses the role of the press, the enlightenment societies, and youth organizations in the process of collecting various ethnographic materials and in the development of local ethnographic studies. The book is accomplished with drawings and photographs illustrating the core ideas postulated in the text.
